CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The No. 11 UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (9-0) knocked off No. 18 Christopher Newport (9-3) by a 70-68 final on the opening day of the Jay Bilas Classic.
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) had a season-high 15 points, one of four Pointers in double figures. He also grabbed a team-best five rebounds.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) led the Pointers with 16 points, tying for the game high.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) and
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) were also in double figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
Bolden had UWSP's first points, but the Pointers faced a 15-4 deficit more than seven minutes into the game. Baumgartner nailed a three, but UWSP faced a 28-13 hole with 5:06 left in the first half. Bolden completed an and-one and
Carter Combs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) drilled a three as UWSP got within 32-25 at the break.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and Abdul-Wahid hit consecutive threes as UWSP started the second half with a quick 6-0 burst.
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) gave UWSP its first lead at 36-35 with 16:30 remaining. Baumgartner buried a three with 9:20 left as UWSP trailed 52-49.
Abdul-Wahid and Baumgartner each hit from beyond the arc as UWSP kept the game within one possession down the stretch. Bolden drained a three and Krohn tied the game at 64-64 with 2:48 remaining. Bolden and Baumgartner each made buckets to give UWSP a late lead and the Pointers held on for the win.
UWSP will take on Randolph-Macon on Friday (Dec. 20) at 7:00 p.m. ET to close out play in N.C.
