Cashin’s Early Touchdown Hands Pointers Lead at UWRF

RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-8, 0-6) fell at UW-River Falls (6-3, 3-3) by a 45-17 final on Saturday.

Jake Leair and Zay Segner (Freeport, Ill./Freeport) combined to complete 16 passes for 171 yards through the air. Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) had 29 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Defensively, Carson Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) led the Pointers with 11 tackles. Josh Kristof (Lena, Wis./Lena) and Christian Nickel (Lake Geneva, Wis./Badger) each recorded a sack. Miles Gallagher (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had an interception and returned it for a touchdown.

The Pointers took the opening kickoff and began at their own 32. Cashin gained eight yards on consecutive rushes. A completion by Leair to Brayden Wiczek (Minocqua, Wis./Lakeland Union) gained a first down and a UWRF penalty moved the ball into enemy territory. Leair gained another first down on the ground three plays later. On the next third down, Leair hit Austin Phillips (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) for 19 yards to set UWSP up at the UWRF 9. Three plays later, a pass interference call gave the Pointers goal-to-go at the two. Cashin punched it in on the next play for a 7-0 UWSP lead.

On the first UWSP possession of the second quarter, a sack fumble was returned for a touchdown as the Falcons tied the game at 7-7. UWRF scored on the next three possessions taking advantage of a blocked punt and another UWSP fumble for a 28-7 lead at the half.

The Falcons got a field goal on the opening drive of the second half. On the next UWRF possession, Gallagher returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown to make it 31-14.

Leair threw for a pair of first downs and Lucas Milz (South Wayne, Wis./Black Hawk) gained two on the ground. But UWSP was halted in the red zone and kicked a field goal.

UWRF scored touchdowns on the Falcons' first two possessions of the fourth to complete the scoring.

The Pointers close out the season at UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Nov. 16).
