WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (1-0) hit the century mark for the first time since the season opener in 2019-20 and downed Lakeland (0-1) by a 101-64 final on Friday at the UWW Tip-Off Tournament. The Pointers extended their non-conference win streak to 12.
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) had a game-high 18 points in her UWSP debut.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) and
Keira Maki (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) were also in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively. UWSP had 16 players score in the win.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) hit a jumper in the opening minute of play. The Muskies hit a three-pointer at the other end of the floor as UWSP trailed for the only time in the game. Smith scored the next seven points on UWSP's next three possessions for a 9-5 lead.
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) and
Keira Maki (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) each made their first UWSP buckets and
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) completed an and-one.
Aubrey Smith (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) also made a free throw late and the Pointers were up 29-12 after one.
Murphy and
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) combined for three three-pointers as the Pointers were ahead 40-19.
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) and
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) got on the scoresheet late and UWSP led 58-26 at the half.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) had a personal 6-0 run as UWSP took a 66-29 lead. McIntyre also had a personal 6-0 run and
Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) made a pair of free throws late as the Pointers led 82-40 after three.
Kate Vanden Berg (Appleton, Wis./North),
Laney Panich (Wautoma, Wis./Wautoma) and
Brooke Bottcher (Belvidere, Ill./Belvidere North) each hit their first collegiate baskets in the fourth quarter as UWSP cruised to the win.
The Pointers take on DePauw on Saturday (Nov. 9) to close out the weekend. Tip-off in Whitewater is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
