Smith Sets Program Record, Pointers Cruise to Win at Earlham

RICHMOND, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-1) completed an undefeated weekend with a 79-56 win over host Earlham (3-3) at the Melissa Johnson Classic finale on Sunday.
 
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) set a UWSP single-game program record with eight made three-pointers. She racked up a season and game-high 24 points.
 
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) posted a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds and she scored 11 points. Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) added 21 points, her third-straight game with at least 20 points.
 
Smith hit her first three to put UWSP ahead 5-3. She hit two more threes with Gawlitta and Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) also hitting from behind the arc in a 19-0 run. Thomson got in on the long-range action with a late three and UWSP led 28-16 after one.
 
Thomson and Gawlitta combined for 15 points in the second quarter and the Pointers were comfortably ahead, 49-29, at the half.
 
Smith hit three more three-pointers in the third quarter and Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) drilled a three as UWSP was up 66-40 heading to the fourth.
 
With 5:33 left in the game, Smith hit her program tying seventh three of the game for a 71-45 lead. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North), Aubrey Smith (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove), Brenna Gehri (Oshkosh, Wis./West) and Laney Panich (Wautoma, Wis./Wautoma) each had a late bucket in the win.
 
The Pointers will return to play on Dec. 7 with a 3:00 p.m. game at Bethany Lutheran.
