STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (2-1) never trailed in a 67-43 win over St. Scholastica (0-3) in the Pointers' home opener on Friday.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led all scorers with 17 points. She just missed a double-double with a team-best nine rebounds.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) and
Maija Rice (L'Anse, Mich./L'Anse Area) were both in double figures with 10 points each.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) made a layup to open the scoring and nailed a three for a 7-2 lead. Rice and
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) each hit from beyond the arc and UWSP led 17-7 after one quarter.
Thomson had five points early in the second quarter as the lead grew to 28-9. Gawlitta had four points in the quarter and the Pointers were up 33-21 at the break.
Keira Maki (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) had two layups and six points in the third quarter as UWSP maintained a double-digit lead. Rice had three points late as the Pointers had a 50-29 advantage heading to the fourth.
Thomson had six points early in the fourth as UWSP went ahead 60-31.
Aubrey Smith (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) had four points as the Pointers closed out the win.
UWSP returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 16) with a 3:00 p.m. tip-off against Concordia (Wis.) in Berg Gym.
