STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-1) won its second-straight home game, 72-50, over Concordia (Wis.) (0-1) behind a 21-0 run from early in the second quarter to early in the third quarter.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) had a double-double with game-highs of 21 points and 15 rebounds. Thomson was 8-for-8 from the free throw line, the most made free throws in her career.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) was also in double figures with 14 points. She just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.
Maddie Murphy (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas) and
Keira Maki (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba) had nine points each off the bench.
Thomson scored UWSP's first four points as UWSP played from behind early. Maki completed an and-one for a 7-6 lead. Gawlitta and
Karissa Smith (Freedom, Wis./Appleton North) each had a bucket, but UWSP trailed 14-11 after one quarter.
Thomson buried a three in the opening minute of the second quarter. After a CUW basket with 9:23 left in the half, the Pointers held the Falcons scoreless the remainder of the quarter. Murphy nailed a couple threes and Gawlitta had four points as UWSP went into the break on a 19-0 run with a 33-16 lead.
Gawlitta made the first bucket of the third quarter to extend the run to 21-0. Thomson drilled a pair of triples and had 12 points in the quarter as UWSP led 58-35 after three.
Murphy hit another three to end a two-and-a-half-minute drought to start the fourth. Maki and
Kate Vanden Berg (Appleton, Wis./North) each made buckets.
Lily Truchon (Herbster, Wis./South Shore) hit a three in the final minute as UWSP rolled to the win.
The Pointers will travel to Indiana for the Melissa Johnson Classic beginning on Saturday (Nov. 23) against Aurora at 4:00 p.m. ET.
