STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (2-0) used a 22-4 run early in the second half to pull away for a 72-47 win over MSOE (1-1) in the Pointers' home opener on Wednesday.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) had a game-high 17 points to lead a quartet of UWSP players in double figures.
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) and
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) had 14 points each.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) added 12.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led the Pointers with nine rebounds.
Krohn bookended an 8-0 run to start the game with layups. Abdul-Wahid threw down one of his two dunks on the night in the early burst. Baumgartner hit three three-pointers as he posted 11-straight UWSP points. Abdul-Wahid scored the final six points for the Pointers in the first half and the lead was just 28-25 at the break.
Bolden nailed back-to-back threes as he and
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) combined for the first 12 points of the second half. Abdul-Wahid had his second dunk amid eight points by Krohn to finish the 22-4 run as the lead grew to 50-29.
Butler and Miron hit triples down the stretch and UWSP hit 6-of-8 free throws to hold off any chance of a late charge by the Raiders.
The Pointers travel to Madison on Saturday (Nov. 16) to face Edgewood. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m.
