PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (1-0) opened the regular season with a 91-59 win at Lakeland (0-2) on Sunday afternoon.
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) poured in a career-best 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting from the floor. He also snagged five rebounds, added an assist and had a block.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) were also in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively. Bolden led the Pointers with eight rebounds.
Bolden made a layup in the opening minute of play, but the Muskies went on an 11-0 run.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) made a layup to halt the run. Krohn then scored six points in short order as UWSP got within 13-11. Butler buried a three for the lead, but Lakeland responded with a three of its own.
Keith Hoffman (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) scored five points on a trio of free throws and a layup. Abdul-Wahid nailed a three with 9:52 remaining in the first half sparking a 27-4 run to end the half. Krohn had 12 in the run and Bolden capped the half with a three at the buzzer for a 48-26 lead at the break.
Bolden, Krohn and
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) combined for the first 11 UWSP points of the second half. Butler hit a pair of three and had a personal eight-point run.
Carter Combs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH),
Jack Hutchinson (Topeka, Kan./Washburn) and
James Jacobs (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) all made their first baskets as Pointers in the second half. Hutchinson's and Jacobs' were from behind the arc.
The Pointers will host MSOE on Wednesday (Nov. 13) in the home opener. Tip-off in Quandt Fieldhouse is slated for 7:00 p.m.
