ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (17-7) split matches at the WashU Tri on Saturday. The Pointers swept North Park (11-10) before falling to host No. 8 WashU (21-4) in four sets.
Freshman
Abby Nevins (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a career day. She posted a season-high 17 digs in the opening match. Then topped that with 24 in game two.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) both had a double-double against WashU. Kopp had 16 kills and 14 digs while Michalske posted 35 assists and 12 digs. Kopp had a match-high 17 kills versus NPU. Michalske had a game-high 34 assists against NPU.
UWSP 3, NPU 0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-22)
Kopp had kills to sandwich a block by
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and
Ella Trieloff (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Viator) as UWSP took a 3-0 lead. Kopp had two kills and a block in a 7-0 burst as UWSP went ahead, 17-12. Trieloff added three kills down the stretch as UWSP took the opening set.
The Pointers got eight kills from five different players to jump in front 11-4 in the second.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) served an ace as did Kopp and a couple coach sanctions versus NPU gave UWSP a 2-0 lead.
Trieloff had a pair of kills and an ace by Kopp gave UWSP a 7-6 lead. Trieloff served up an ace of her own as UWSP held a 10-8 advantage. Mosinski had two kills and a block in a 6-0 run as UWSP pulled ahead, 19-13. Shaw and Kopp had two kills each to complete the sweep.
UWSP 1, WashU 3 (21-25, 14-25, 25-22, 13-25)
Michalske had an early ace as UWSP began with a 5-3 lead. Kopp added a trio of kills as the set was tied, 16-16. Trieloff gave UWSP an 18-71 lead with a kill, but WashU ended the set with an 8-3 run.
Kopp and
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) combined for a block and six kills, but UWSP dropped the second set to fall behind 2-0.
Shaw had an assist, a block and three kills as the Pointers took an 11-6 lead in the third. After WashU rallied back to take an 18-17 lead, the Pointers finished on a 8-3 run to earn the win in the third set.
Bella Lucero (Antioch, Ill./Carmel Catholic) opened the fourth set with an ace. Shaw had two kills and an ace, but UWSP trailed, 12-10. Thomka and Kopp combined for three kills, but WashU took the match with a fourth-set win.
The Pointers head south again on Tuesday (Oct. 22) to face Edgewood. First serve in Madison is set for 7:00 p.m.
