EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (1-4, 0-2) lost at UW-Eau Claire (2-3, 1-1) by a 41-0 final on Saturday.
UWSP mustered just 141 yards of total offense.
Brycen Cashin (Plover, Wis./Pacelli) had 34 of UWSP's 54 rushing yards.
Miles Gallagher (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) had 43 receiving yards. Quarterbacks
Charlie Smith (Hartland, Wis./Arrowhead) and
Ryan Thompson (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial) combined for 13 completions for 83 yards.
Defensively,
Carson Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) had his second-straight big game making a game-high 13 tackles.
Caleb DeJong (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added eight and
Tyriq Sims (Chicago, Ill./Hubbard) had five, including one for loss.
The Pointers turned the ball over on downs twice and threw an inception, but only trailed 7-0 midway through the second quarter.
Smith hit Gallagher for 14 yards and a first down to start a drive in the second quarter. The pair connected again three plays later as UWSP gained access to UWEC territory. Cashin gained eight yards on two plays and Smith moved the chains with a fourth-down conversion. The drive stalled and UWSP's field goal attempt was no good.
The Blugolds tacked on a field goal before halftime. In the third quarter, UWEC scored three touchdowns and added another early in the fourth for a 38-0 UWSP hole.
UWSP got two first downs in the fourth quarter as
Reed Smith (Powell, Wyo./Powell) carried for 18 yards and Gallagher gained six on the ground for the other.
The Pointers travel to UW-Whitewater on Friday (Oct. 18) for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff against the Warhawks.
