ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (4-9-0) were able to snap a scoreless streak, but fell at Hamline (10-3-0) by a 7-1 final in the 2024 opener on Saturday.
The Pointers had gone 140 minutes before
Courtney Leising (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) was able to find the back of the net.
The host Pipers got on the board first, scoring at 10:26 of the first. Hamline added a second goal at 13:52 to make it 2-0.
Leising then got UWSP on the board at 18:09 of the first, just over seven full periods without a tally.
Maddie Andrle (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) and
Hailey Stanius (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake Area) picked up assists on the goal.
Hamline pushed the lead back to two in the final minute of the period. Then in the second period, the Pipers scored goals eight seconds apart to make it 5-1.
The Pipers added two more goals in the third period, including an empty-net goal with 1:28 left.
Emily Griege (Chesterfield, Mo./Westminster Christian Academy) and
Anne Beck (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) combined to make 41 saves in net for the Pointers. Hamline goaltender Airika Penney had 21 saves.
The Pointers travel to Mequon on Tuesday (Jan. 9) for a 7:00 p.m. game against Concordia (Wis.).
