Men’s Basketball Falls in Double Overtime at UWL

LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (7-6, 1-1) dropped a heartbreaker in double overtime, 86-84, at UW-La Crosse (7-6, 1-1) on Saturday.
 
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) led a trio of Pointers in double figures with 19 points. Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) added 17 and Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) scored 16 points. Butler had a double-double with a team-best 10 rebounds.
 
Abdul-Wahid completed an and-one in the opening minute for a 3-0 lead. He added a layup as UWSP scored on three-straight possessions for a 9-8 edge. Butler completed an and-one with five straight for UWSP. Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) made a three for a 21-15 advantage.
 
Butler and Bolden each drilled a three as UWSP maintained the lead. Myles Coleman (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield Central) and Abdul-Wahid added late buckets as the Pointers held a 39-33 lead at the break.
 
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) scored four points as UWSP regained the lead at 45-44. Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) buried a three and added a jumper to bookend a 10-0 run by UWSP. The Eagles responded with a 10-0 burst to tie the game, 57-57.
 
Butler hit from behind the arc and scored five in-a-row for a 66-59 lead. Bolden nailed a jumper with 55 seconds left, but UWL scored the final five points of regulation to send the game to overtime.
 
Abdul-Wahid had three points early in the first overtime. Bolden had the final four as a second extra session would be needed as the game was tied 77-77.
 
Abdul-Wahid and Bolden each buried a three as UWSP attempted to rally after UWL opened on a 5-0 run. Bolden hit one free throw with 23 seconds remaining to tie the game at 84-all. The Eagles got a go-ahead bucket with one second left to hand the Pointers heartbreak.
 
The Pointers will face UW-Whitewater in the first home conference game of the season on Wednesday (Jan. 10). Tip-off in Quandt Fieldhouse is slated for 7:00 p.m.
