Pointers Hit Century Mark, Upend UWW at Home

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – For the first time since February 2011, the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (8-6, 2-1) posted 100 points and knocked off No. 9 UW-Whitewater (12-2, 2-1) by a 100-92 final.
 
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led the Pointers with 24 points. Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) added 20 points as the duo each hit three three-pointers in the win. Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis), Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) and Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) were also in double figures with 14, 12 and 10, respectively.
 
Abdul-Wahid and Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) hit back-to-back threes as the Pointers took their first lead, 6-5. Butler added seven, including a triple, but UWW matched the Pointers at 19-19. Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) drilled a three as UWSP regained the lead, 26-25, midway through the first.
 
Gillie posted six straight UWSP points and five by Abdul-Wahid edged UWSP in front 39-38. Myles Coleman (Milwaukee, Wis./Brookfield Central) added four points with Butler posting five and a pair of free throws late by Gillie gave the Pointers a 52-48 halftime lead.
 
Abdul-Wahid opened the second half with a three. Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) and Bolden had four points each as the Pointers held a 65-60 advantage four minutes in. Butler and Genrich nailed back-to-back threes to push the lead to 11. Abdul-Wahid added a dunk and the lead was 75-64 with 12 minutes to go.
 
Seven-straight points by Genrich preceded another dunk by Abdul-Wahid as the lead reached a game-high 12 with 4:34 remaining. Bolden hit consecutive baskets and his two free throws with 12 seconds left pushed the scoreboard to triple digits to seal the win.
 
UWSP will head back on the road to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Jan. 13). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
