MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-7, 2-7) let a one-possession game slip away in the fourth quarter in a 61-48 loss at UW-Stout (13-7, 3-6) on Wednesday.
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Pointers in scoring with 12 points.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) added seven, all in the first half.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) had six points with
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill),
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) contributing five apiece.
Gawlitta got UWSP on the board and a three by Krueger tied the game at 5-5.
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho), McIntyre and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) each hit jumpers to give UWSP an 11-7 advantage. McIntyre hit another bucket, but a late three saw the Pointers trail, 14-13, after one.
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) scored the Pointers' first four points of the second. Gawlitta nailed a three and scored five-straight for UWSP. McIntyre drilled a three in the closing seconds and the game went to break tied at 25-25.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) hit a pair of jumpers to begin the third. Pfeifer added four points and a pair of free throws by Krueger gave UWSP the lead at 37-35. Hagen made a layup, but Stout ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to put UWSP behind, 42-39, heading to the fourth.
The Blue Devils opened the fourth with 11-straight to extend the run to 16 before Thomson hit a three with 3:11 remaining. Gawlitta scored three and Thomson added a late bucket.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (Feb. 3). Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
