PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – No team is unbeaten in WIAC play after the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (9-9, 3-4) handed No. 11 UW-Platteville (15-3, 6-1) its first league loss, 65-64, on Wednesday.
Malik Abdul-Wahid (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) hit a fade-away jumper that fell through the net with 0.5 seconds left for the win.
Abdul-Wahid led the Pointers in scoring with 16 points on the night, including the game-winning bucket. He also had a team-high six rebounds.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) and
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) were also in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Butler and
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) hit back-to-back threes as UWSP reeled off a 10-0 run for a 10-3 lead early. Miron and Abdul-Wahid each hit from behind the arc, but the Pioneers pulled ahead 39-30 at the half.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) nailed a three to open the second half. Miron scored eight-straight UWSP points culminating with three to get UWSP within 44-41.
Blake Kortz (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) sunk a three to tie the game at 48-48 with 12:28 remaining.
Abdul-Wahid drilled a three and had five points in a 7-0 run as UWSP took a 61-56 lead with 6:25 to go. He hit another basket with 4:05 to go for a 63-58 lead. UWP posted the next six points until Abdul-Wahid's buzzer-beater for the win.
UWSP will travel to UW-River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 27) for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off to begin the second half of league play.
