STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (8-9, 2-4) had a furious second half rally, but were unable to hold on late in a 72-67 loss to UW-Oshkosh (8-9, 1-5) on Saturday.
Josiah Butler (Appleton, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) and
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) had 15 points each to lead the Pointers.
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) was in double figures for the first time in his career with 11. Gillie led the way on the glass with eight rebounds.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly) got the Pointers on the board following a 7-0 start by the Titans. Miron hit again with
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) nailing a three to cap a 7-3 run as UWSP got within 15-11.
Genrich drained another three just before the midpoint of the first half, but the Pointers went cold from the field. By the time
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) got next field goal with 5:32 left in the half, the deficit had reached double digits. Butler made a three and Gillie had four points down the stretch as UWSP trailed 44-29 at the break.
Butler hit from behind the arc twice and had eight points as the Pointers opened the second half with an 11-0 run. Baumgartner drained a three to put the Pointers ahead, 52-50, for the first time with 12:19 left in the game.
The Titans responded with nine-straight before Baumgartner nailed another triple. Then with 2:54 to go, Baumgartner again gave the Pointers a lead with a three, 64-63. A Bolden three in the closing seconds was all the Pointers could muster as UWO ended the game on a 9-3 run.
UWSP will travel to UW-Platteville on Wednesday (Jan. 24) to wrap up the first half of league play. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
