RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-3, 2-3) came up just short in overtime, 63-60, in league action at UW-River Falls (11-5, 2-3) on Wednesday night.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led a trio of Pointers in double figures with 13 points. She also had a team-best eight rebounds.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) added 11 points each.
Thomson buried a three with Krueger and Gawlitta helping the trio combine to put UWSP ahead 11-5.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) and
Rachel Hagen (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East) each had a layup late and UWSP led, 20-12, after one.
Gawlitta drained a three to open the scoring in the second quarter. McIntyre added four points in the frame and UWSP held a 31-23 lead at the break.
Thomson hit from behind the arc early in the third.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville), Gawlitta and Thomson had a field goal each as the Falcons gained the lead, 43-40, heading to the fourth.
Thomson completed an and-one for UWSP's first points of the fourth. Krueger drilled a three-pointer with 3:06 remaining to get UWSP within 52-50. Krueger hit a pair of free throws and
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) made a layup in the final minute to push the game to overtime.
In the extra session, Krueger and Nies each made a pair of free throws.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) had the Pointers' lone field goal and UWSP couldn't find a game-tying basket in the end.
The Pointers will travel to UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Jan. 20) for a 3:00 p.m. matchup with the Titans.
