STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A 10-minute drought from the field in the first half spelled doom for the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (8-8, 2-3) in a 72-56 home loss the UW-River Falls (10-6, 4-1).
Cal Krohn (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha West) and
Darrius Bolden (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet) had nine points each to lead the Pointers in scoring.
Josiah Gillie (Milwaukee, Wis./West Allis) and
Logan Baumgartner (Medford, Wis./Medford) added seven points apiece.
Butler got UWSP on the board in the second minute of play. Bolden buried a three for a 5-2 lead.
Seth Miron (Appleton, Wis./Kimberly), Krohn and Gillie each scored for an 11-4 advantage with 14:32 left in the first half.
The visiting Falcons posted a 17-3 run before
Jake Buchanan (Kimberly, Wis./Kimberly) hit a three with 4:31 remaining before halftime.
Ryan Genrich (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago) nailed a triple and Krohn completed an and-one, but UWSP trailed 32-23 at the half.
Miron and Krohn hit early jumpers as the Pointers closed to within five early in the second half. Gillie scored four-straight points, but UWRF steady built the lead to 20, 59-39, with just under seven minutes left.
Bolden hit a pair of threes down the stretch. Baumgartner nailed one of his own and
Jacksen Smith (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) sunk his first career three in the closing seconds.
UWSP remains at home to face UW-Oshkosh at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday (Jan. 20).
