Women’s Basketball Pulls Away Late to Take Down UWEC at Home

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-2, 2-2) picked up a 72-63 home win over UW-Eau Claire (7-8, 1-3) on Saturday.
 
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Pointers with 16 points, her seventh game of the season in double figures. Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was also in double digits with 13 points. Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) and Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) had nine points each. Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and Thomson led the Pointers with eight rebounds each.
 
Nies had four early points giving the Pointers their first lead at 8-7. She added another bucket and Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) buried back-to-back threes as UWSP led 16-12 after one.
 
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) scored the first basket of the second quarter before the Blugolds went on a 9-0 run. Gawlitta drilled a three sparking an 8-0 run by the Pointers. Thomson nailed consecutive threes and Pfeifer had a layup late as the Pointers were up 35-29 at the break.
 
Krueger scored in the opening seconds of the third and Gawlitta sunk a triple for a 40-31 lead. Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) completed an and-one late as the Pointers held a slim 47-45 lead heading to the fourth.
 
Nies opened the scoring in the fourth quarter. Krueger added four-straight points. Gawlitta scored six points in an 8-2 burst by the Pointers to push the lead to nine, 62-53. Thomson drained a three with 1:22 left and the Pointers went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to secure the win.
 
The Pointers travel to UW-River Falls on Wednesday (Jan. 17) in the first of back-to-back road games. Tip-off in River Falls is set for 7:00 p.m.
