WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (12-2, 1-2) held #4 UW-Whitewater (14-0, 3-0) to a season-low 53 points, but fell by a 53-44 final.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led the Pointers with eight points each. Courtney Kruger added seven.
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) and
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) had five points apiece.
Gawlitta tied the game at 2-2 with a layup on UWSP's first possession. She added another layup, but UWW went ahead 13-4 before McIntyre halted the run with a jumper.
Ava Loftus (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) hit a jumper and
Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) buried a three as UWSP trailed 19-11 after one.
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) hit a jumper and Thomson nailed a three as UWSP scored the first five points of the second. Krueger hit from behind the arc to stop a 7-0 run by the Warhawks.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) had a layup late and the Pointers were down 32-24 at the half.
Campion made a pair of free throws and hit a three to account for UWSP's first five points in the third quarter. McIntyre, Krueger and Loftus had two points each cutting the deficit to six each time as the Pointers were down just 41-35 heading to the fourth.
Krueger hit a jumper for UWSP first points of the fourth after a 4-0 start by UWW. Gawlitta made four free throws and Thomson sunk a three in the final minute.
The Pointers return home on Saturday (Jan. 13) to take on UW-Eau Claire. Tip-off in Berg Gym is slated for 3:00 p.m.
