STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Nora Lee (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) made history as she scored the first goal at the UWSP Turf Facility as the UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (2-6-0) beat visiting Beloit (2-6-1) on Wednesday night.
After a scoreless first half that saw UWSP's
Madison Culli (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) record the only shot on goal, the Pointers began to apply the pressure in the second half.
On UWSP's third corner kick of the second half in the 70th minute, Culli sent a serve in from the far corner. The ball dropped into traffic and Lee tagged the loose ball into the net. It was Lee's second goal of the season, the first at the new facility and the eventual match-winner.
The Pointers struck again in the 75th minute. Again it was Culli creating the scoring chance, this time with a deke past the defender to reach the end line. Her cross was tapped out in front by
Heather Iverson (Luxemburg, Wis./Luxemburg-Casco) and
Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) drilled the ball past the keeper for the 2-0 lead.
UWSP goalkeeper
Savannah Reed (Waukegan, Ill./St. Joseph Catholic Academy) posted her second clean sheet of the year. She needed to make just one save coming in the 83rd minute. Beloit goalkeeper Maya Betzler had four saves.
The Pointers begin conference play on Saturday (Sept. 30) with a 6:00 p.m. home match at the UWSP Turf Facility against UW-Stout. The match will be Senior Night for the Pointers.
