STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (3-6-0, 1-0-0) scored twice int eh second half to beat visiting UW-Stout (3-4-2, 0-1-0) in the conference opener on Saturday.
Following a scoreless first half, UWSP was awarded a penalty kick in the 65th minute as
Gabby Dunn (Dallas, Texas/Bishop Lynch) was fouled in the box. She stepped to the spot and buried the PK to give UWSP the 1-0 lead.
In the 80th minute of play, the Pointers scored on the run of play.
Nora Lee (Holmen, Wis./Holmen) sent the ball forward for UWSP's half of the field.
Emma Schmidt (Oshkosh, Wis./West) had a great one-touch layoff that
Madison Culli (Arlington Heights, Ill./Prospect) ran onto. Culli dribbled past a defender and rang a shot off the post and in for a 2-0 lead.
UWSP goalkeeper
Jessica Nigbur (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) notched her first career win and first career shutout for the Pointers. She made two saves, both in the second half.
Senior
Gina Wasniewski (Ironton, Minn./Brainerd) and junior
Mara Gustafson (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) had two shots on goal each to lead UWSP.
The Pointers travel to Minnesota on Sunday (Oct. 1) for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference match at Saint Mary's.
