OSHKOSH, Wis. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (12-3, 1-1) nearly pushed No. 3 UW-Oshkosh (18-0, 2-0) to a decisive fifth set in league action on Tuesday. UWSP fell, 3-1 (13-25, 25-14, 18-25, 24-26) after battling back several times in the match.
Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) posted a double-double for the Pointers. She racked up a match-high 33 assists and had 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season.
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) led the Pointers with 23 digs.
Ryleigh Zeller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) was also in double digits with 17 digs.
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) topped the Pointers with 15 kills.
Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a solid night with a match-best six blocks and added seven kills.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) just missed double figures with nine kills.
Kopp had two early kills, but the Titans burst ahead 14-5 in the first set.
Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) and Thomka each had a kill as UWSP lost the first set.
Thomka had three kills and three blocks jumped in front, 13-4, in the second set.
Zoe Kramer (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) had a kill and an ace late as UWSP evened the match at 1-1.
Kopp had three kills to begin the third as UWSP led 7-3.
Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had a pair of kills as the team were tied at 16-all. UWO ended the set on a 9-1 run to put UWSP behind, 2-1.
Thomka had an early kill, but UWSP trailed 10-2 in the fourth. Shaw had three kills as UWS put a 7-0 run up to get within one. Kopp had three kills and an ace as UWSP roared back to take a 20-19 lead. Mosinski had three kills to give UWSP set point at 24-22, but the Titans strung together four-straight points to end the match.
UWSP will travel to Minnesota on Saturday (Sept. 30) for a non-conference matchup at Augsburg. First serve in Minneapolis is slated for 7:00 p.m.
