Kopp’s 10th Double-Double Lifts Pointers Past Augsburg

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 17 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (13-3) grabbed a 3-1 win (25-11, 25-19, 19-25, 25-16) at Augsburg (9-8) in non-conference action on Saturday.
 
Ashley Kopp (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) posted her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 20 kills to go with 14 digs. Grace Michalske (Wausau, Wis./West) led all players with 39 assists and narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs.
 
Tessa Erlandson (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon Wanamingo) registered her 10th-straight match in double figures with a match-leading 17 digs on Saturday.
 
Kopp racked up five early kills as UWSP went ahead 7-3 in the first set. Carly Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had a kill and an ace in a 6-0 burst as the lead reached 13-5. Ryleigh Zeller (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) served consecutive aces and Lauren Shaw (Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) had two kills as another 6-0 run put UWSP ahead 19-6. A Michalske ace sealed the first set as UWSP ended on a 6-2 run.
 
Summer Salettel (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) had a block and two kills as UWSP used a 10-3 spurt to take a 12-8 lead in the second. Sydney Mosinski (Nevada, Iowa/Nevada) had three late kills as UWSP pulled away for the 2-0 lead.
 
Kopp had a kill and an ace as UWSP led 6-5 in the third. A 6-0 run by Augsburg saw UWSP trail 11-6. Kopp and Mosinski had two kills each as UWSP chipped away to get within 17-14. But a 6-1 burst by the Auggies gave the host the third set.
 
Emily Nielsen (Sussex, Wis./Hamilton) opened the fourth set with an ace setting the tone for a 6-2 lead early. Nielsen served up two more aces in a 9-2 run as UWSP seized control, 20-10. Kopp, Salettel and Thomka had a kill each as UWSP secured the win.
 
The Pointers return home for a non-conference match on Tuesday (Oct. 3). The 7:00 p.m. match against St. Catherine in Jersey Night and fans are encourage to wear their favorite sports jersey.
