STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point head men's basketball coach Kent Dernbach has announced the addition of Paul Combs and Eddie Goldston as assistant coaches on his staff for the 2023-24 season.
"When putting together our staff, I wanted to find individuals who are great people with a genuine personality to put others first," stated Dernbach. "Coach Combs and Coach Goldston are amazing leaders who happen to coach basketball. I am excited to bring Paul's track record of successful program building and Eddie's proven ability to create meaningful relationships to not only to the men's basketball program, but to the entire UWSP community."
Combs comes to UWSP after most recently at Carroll University as the head men's basketball coach. He won 320 games over his 24 years of head coaching between Division II and Division III. He posted more than 104 wins at Carroll in nine-plus seasons.
Prior to Carroll, Combs spent four seasons at the helm at Wayne State College. There he won 54 games and led WSC to national prominence. His 2012-13 team had the best start in school history and most wins in more than a decade. That season, his team had the top scoring and three-point defense in the NSIC.
No stranger to the WIAC, Combs spent six years at UW-Platteville and was the WIAC Coach of the Year in 2004-05 where he led the Pioneers to the WIAC Championship. In his final season at UWP, Combs' team reached a No. 1 ranking nationally and finished 23-6 in 2008-09.
Combs also had coaching stints at Lakeland as the head coach from 1999 to 2003 where they won back-to-back conference championships. At Ripon College as an assistant from 1994 to 1999 he helped the team make four NCAA Tournament appearances and went 102-21. He holds a master's degree from UW-Oshkosh and earned his bachelor's degree at Ripon College where he played point guard for Hall of Fame coach Bob Gillespie.
Goldston arrives at UWSP after spending the last two seasons as an assistant coach at Lakeland University. He helped the Muskies win 23 games over the last two seasons. In his two seasons at Lakeland, guard Cam Jaeger earned back-to-back All-NACC honors.
Prior to Lakeland, Goldston was a graduate assistant coach at Concordia University Ann Arbor for two seasons. There, he aided in the recruitment and development of a WHAC All-Freshman and another All-WHAC player.
Goldston played collegiately at Judson University and was a team captain in 2017-18. He holds a master's degree from Concordia and a bachelor's degree from Judson.
