STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 21 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (29-9, 19-5) finished the series sweep of No. 15 UW-Oshkosh (24-13, 15-9) to win the program's 11th WIAC regular season title. UWSP won game one, 9-1, and
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) homered twice in game two for a 3-2 victory.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) was dominant in game one improving to 6-0 on the season. He struck out five in 7.0 innings with just one run allowed.
Seniors
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) and
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) had two RBI each in game one. Nelson added another RBI in game two and fellow senior Finger had two RBI on the two solo home runs.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) had two hits and two RBI in game one.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) and
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) also had two hits each in game one.
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) had two hits in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 9, UWO 1
Senior
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) singled to start the UWSP second inning. Van Ess drew a walk and Homolka singled to load the bases. Two batters later, Henwood hit a sac fly to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
The Titans turned three singles into a run in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) drew a base on balls with one out in the seventh. Oliver was hit by a pitch and a fielder's choice put runners at the corners with two away. Van Ess singled to put UWSP back in front, 2-1.
Tomczak doubled to begin the eighth. Henwood singled and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Nelson doubled to drive in two. A UWO error allowed another run to score. Oliver and Van Ess each had an RBI single to make it 7-1. Another UWO error gave the Pointers a run. Henwood singled with two away to plate another run to push the advantage to 9-1.
Paulsen held UWO to one run over 7.0 frames and earned the win with UWSP's run in the seventh.
Austin Syvertson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph) tossed a perfect eighth and
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) pitched a perfect ninth.
Game 2 – UWSP 3, UWO 2
Nelson belted a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, the first hit by either side.
UWSP starter
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) held UWO hitless until the sixth. The Titans got two runs on three hits in the frame to take a 2-1 lead.
Finger quickly tied the game at 2-2 with a solo home run on the third pitch he saw in the bottom of the sixth.
In the eighth, Finger belted the first pitch of the inning out to left for a 3-2 lead. It was his third multi-home run game of his career.
Schultz went 5.2 innings with five strikeouts and just three hits allowed.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) struck out two in 2.1 hitless frames. Syvertson recorded his first save of the year and sixth of his career with a scoreless ninth.
The Pointers will be the top seed in next week's WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) that will be played at Zimmermann Field. UWSP will face UW-Oshkosh in the opening game at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday (May 11). UW-La Crosse and UW-Whitewater will play in game two at 3:00 p.m.
