STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 13 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (29-10) suffered its first loss of the WIAC Tournament at home on Thursday to UW-Oshkosh (25-13) by a 5-3 final.
Freshman
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) belted a home run among his two hits and drove in all three runs for the Pointers. Senior
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) also had two hits.
The Titans got on the board in the third inning on a pair of two-out singles with a walk sandwiched in between.
UWSP struck back in the fourth.
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) roped a double to left with one away. Oliver followed with a two-run blast to right-center for a 2-1 UWSP lead.
UWO retook the lead with three runs on three hits in the fifth inning. The Titans tacked on a run in the eighth and UWSP trailed 5-2 late.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the eighth. Nelson was hit by a pitch. With two down, Oliver singled to plate one run.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drew a walk to load the bases with two out, but UWSP could not post any further runs.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) went 4.0 innings in the start.
Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) struck out three in an inning of work.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) had a strikeout in 3.0 frames of relief.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) fanned one in the ninth.
The Pointers will face UW-Whitewater in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. on Friday (May 12) at Zimmermann Field.
