Pointers Split with Ranked Titans, Konitzer Notches Win 100 at UWSP

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – UW-Stevens Point softball coach Ryan Konitzer won his 100th game at UWSP as his Pointers split a doubleheader against No. 22 UW-Oshkosh (31-5, 8-4) on Senior Day at McCarty Memorial Field. The Pointers (21-11) dropped the opener, 6-1, before rebounding with a 4-3 win in game two. Konitzer becomes the fourth coach in UWSP softball history to record 100 victories with the Pointers.
 
Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) recorded a pair of hits and three RBI in game two. Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had a hit in each game and scored a run in game two. Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) had an RBI in game one and scored a run in game two.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 1, UWO 6
The Titans turned two doubles into a run and a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
 
UWSP responded right back. Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) hit a leadoff double, her school record 53rd of her career, to extend her hitting streak to 12 games. Heckendorf singled to put runners on the corners.Two batters later, Klicker doubled to tie the game at 1-1.
 
UWO got a run in the third and three in the fourth. The Titans added a single run in the seventh as well.
 
In the fifth, Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) drew a walk to start the inning. Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) singled with one away, but both runners remained stranded.
 
Baker singled with one down in the seventh and again was left stranded.
 
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) went 3.0 innings in the start. She struck out one. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) struck out four over the final 4.0 frames.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 4, UWO 3
Again in game two, the Titans drew first blood with two runs on a pair of hits in the top of the first.
 
And for the second straight game, the Pointers responded in the bottom of the first. Heckendorf singled with one out. Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) drew a walk. With two outs, Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Roepke stepped in a dropped a single into right that was misplayed allowing all three runners to score for a 3-2 lead.
 
The Titans turned a walk and a single into a run in the second to knot the game at 3-3.
 
Traxel reached on an error to begin the third. Another UWO error put two aboard. Roepke then hit a single down the left field line to put UWSP in front, 4-3.
 
UWSP starting pitcher Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) improved to 3-0 on the season with 4.0 innings in the start. She struck out two and gave up just three hits. Tkach held the Titans hitless over the final 3.0 to earn the save.
 
The Pointers close out the regular season home slate with a 3:00 p.m. twin bill against Dubuque on Thursday (May 4).
