Lawrence Belts Home Run, Pointers Sweep UD in Home Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) launched a two-run pinch-hit home run in the final home at-bat of her career as the UW-Stevens Point softball team (23-11) finished off a sweep of visiting Dubuque (11-27) on Thursday. UWSP won game one, 5-2, and completed the sweep in run-rule fashion, 14-5, thanks in part to Lawrence's home run.

Lawrence was one of four Pointers with a two-RBI game on the day. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) had two RBI in game one and added another in game two.  Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) had two RBI each in game two.

Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) had four hits on the day, three of which came in game two. She scored twice in each game and had an RBI in each.

Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) had three hits on the day and drove in a run in each game. She has hit safely in 10 of the last 12 games. Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) also had three hits on the day with an RBI in game one and three runs scored in game two.

Game 1 – UWSP 5, Dubuque 2
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) started the UWSP third by drawing a walk. Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) singled to put two aboard. Klicker followed with a double driving in one run. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) hit a sac fly to drive in another. Roepke followed with an RBI single. Baker capped the rally with a single to push the lead to 4-0.

The Spartans broke up UWSP starter Makenna Tkach's (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) no-hitter in the fourth. Two hits and a walk gave UD a run. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) came on with the bases loaded and did not allow an inherited runner to score as UWSP led 4-1.

The Pointers got the run back in the bottom of the fourth, but not until there were two outs. Klicker drew a base on balls and stole second. Otto then ripped a single up the middle to score Klicker for a 5-1 advantage.

Dubuque got a run in the fifth, an unearned run, on just one hit. UWSP pitching held up the rest of the way stranding one runner in the fifth, another in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure the win.

Zygowski struck out three in 3.1 innings with just two hits allowed. Tkach went 3.2 frames with three hits allowed.

Game 2 – UWSP 14, Dubuque 5 (5 inn.)
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) singled to begin the UWSP first inning. She moved to second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by Klicker.

The Spartans turned two walks into two runs in the second on a two-out double to put UWSP behind, 2-1.

UWSP quickly erased the deficit in the bottom of the inning. Otto drew a leadoff walk. Roepke and Baker singled to load the bases. Cibrario singled to push home one run. A wild pitch plated another. Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) drew a walk to reload the bases. Two batters later, Heckendorf hit an RBI goroundout to give the Pointers a 4-2 lead.

Klicker singled to start the third. Otto also singled and a fielding error allowed Klicker to scored from first. After a wild pitch moved Otto third, Roepke hit a sac fly to make it 6-2. Baker doubled and Cibrario singled to put runners on the corners. Meyers hit a sac fly to drive in a run. Candre singled to drive in another for an 8-2 lead.

After the Spartans got a run in the fourth, UWSP blew it open in the bottom of the frame. Traxel walked and Klicker singled with both runners ending up in scoring position for Otto. She hit an RBI groundout. Roepke and Baker drew walks to load the bases. Cibrario plated one with a groundout. Lindgren pinch hit and drove in two with a single. Then Lawrence stepped up to pinch hit. She blasted the second pitch she saw over the left field fence for a 14-3 lead.

UD scored twice in the fifth, but UWSP held on for the run-rule win.

Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) notched her second win in as many days by tossing 3.0 innings. She fanned three. Tkach struck out one in 2.0 innings of work.

UWSP will travel to Menomonie on Saturday (May 6) for the conference finale starting at 5:00 p.m. The Pointers need one win at UW-Stout to secure a bid in the WIAC Tournament.
