Pointers Stave off Elimination Twice with Walk-Off, Late Rally

WHITEWATER, Wis. The UW-Stevens Point softball team (27-12) earned a pair of wins in elimination games of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) on Friday. The Pointers needed extra innings to walk-off in a 4-3 win over UW-Eau Claire (17-19). Then in the nightcap, UWSP posted a three-run seventh to take down No. 21 UW-Oshkosh (34-7) by an 8-6 final.
 
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had four hits on the day, including a key two-run single in the seventh inning of game two. Three of her hits came against UWO and she drove in four on the day.
 
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) also had four hits on the day, three against UWO. She hit a three-run home run against the Titans and scored four runs on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWEC 3 (10 inn.)
The Pointers had runners aboard in the first and second innings before finally cracking the scoreboard in the fourth. Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) singled with one away in the fourth. Baker reached on an error and Meyers singled to give UWSP a 1-0 lead. Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) also had RBI singles in the frame for a 3-0 lead.
 
The Blugolds got two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3. The game remained deadlocked at 3-3 until the 10th.
 
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) reached on an infield single to begin the 10th. Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) singled and both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek). Roepke then lifted fly ball to left for a walk-off sac fly.
 
Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) tossed 5.0 frames with two strikeouts. Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) fanned seven in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 8, UWO 6
Baker singled to begin the second inning. Meyers reached on a bunt single. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Otto. Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) dropped a sacrifice bunt and UWSP took a 1-0 lead.
 
The Titans responded with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the second.
 
Heckendorf singled to start the third. Roepke drew a walk with two away. Baker then belted a three-run home run to put UWSP back in front, 4-3.
 
UWO turned three hits into two runs in the fourth to regain the lead, 5-4. The Titans would tack on another run in the fifth to make it 6-4.
 
UWSP got a run back in the sixth as Baker led off with a single. She scored on a double by Meyers.
 
Klicker reached on a wild pitch to start the seventh. Traxel reached and both moved to scoring position on an error. Roepke singled to tie the game at 6-6. Two batters later, Meyers singled to plate both runners for an 8-6 lead.
 
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) picked up the win with two strikeouts in 4.2 innings in the circle. Zygowski fanned two in 2.1 frames.
 
The Pointers will play host and top-seed UW-Whitewater at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (May 13) in another elimination game with the winner advancing to the Championship game against UW-La Crosse.
