Pointers Win on Walk-Off, Take Championship to Extras at WIAC Tournament

WHITEWATER, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team's run at the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's) culminated in extra innings of the Championship Game as the Pointers finished as runner-up to UW-La Crosse (28-13). The Pointers (28-13) got a walk-off win for the second-straight day to eliminate host and top-seed UW-Whitewater (26-11) by a 3-2 final. Then in the Championship Game, UWSP took UWL to extras before the Eagles prevailed in nine innings, 2-1.

Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) led the UWSP offense with two hits in each game. She scored a run against UWW.

Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had two hits against the Warhawks. She scored a run, the walk-off winner, versus UWW.

Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) pitched 11.0 innings over the two games picking up the decision in both to improve to 14-4 on the season. She struck out 12 with just two runs allowed.

Game 1 – UWSP 3, UWW 2
The Warhawks quickly turned a walk and two doubles into a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Zygowski entered with one out in the frame and stranded two runners while holding the deficit to 2-0.

Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) and Traxel hit consecutive one-out singles in the fourth inning. Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) followed with an RBI single to get UWSP within 2-1. With two down, a UWW error allowed the tying run to score.

Traxel singled to lead off the sixth. Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) singled with one out and Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) drew a two-out walk, but the bases were left loaded as the inning ended.

Candre singled to begin the seventh. She moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a sacrifice bunt. Klicker then lifted a fly ball to left and Candre scored the game-winner on the sac fly.

Zygowski pitched 6.2 shutout frames in relief to earn the win. She fanned 11 Warhawks and scattered five hits.

Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWL 2 (9 inn.)
Candre and Klicker drew walks in the first inning, but were stranded in scoring position to end the frame.

Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) singled with two away in the third inning. A UWL error allowed her to score from first for a 1-0 lead.

UWL turned a leadoff triple in the sixth into the game-tying run on a one-out sac fly.

The game remained tied until the ninth. The Eagles were able to get the winning run home on three singles with a walk in the mix.

Zygowski and Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) tossed 4.1 innings apiece and each struck out one.
