LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (20-10, 4-6) came up short in both games of a league doubleheader at UW-La Crosse (22-11, 7-3). UWSP scored five runs in each game, but dropped the opener, 7-5, before falling in game two, 8-5.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) extended her hitting streak to 11 games with three hits on the day. She scored a run in each game and drove in a run in game two.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) drove in two runs and scored a run in game one.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI on the day.
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) and
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) each had a two-hit game.
Game 1 – UWSP 5, UWL 7
Heckendorf singled and stole second with one out in the first. Traxel singled to put UWSP ahead, 1-0. With two outs, Otto singled to score Traxel for a 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the second on five hits, three of which were doubles.
UWSP battled right back in the top of the third. Candre singled with one away. Heckendorf singled as did Traxel to get one run back. A UWL error allowed another run to score as the Pointers tied the game at 4-4.
After UWL retook the lead,
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) singled to begin the fourth.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) drew a walk.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) singled to right and UWSP again pulled even at 5-5.
The Eagles scratched across one run in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Otto doubled with one down in the seventh.
Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake) singled to put runners on the corners. Baker was hit by a pitch, but the bases remained loaded without a run scored to end the game.
In the circle,
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) struck out three.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) and
Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) had one strikeout each.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, UWL 8
UWL struck first in game two with a pair of runs on two hits and a sac fly in the bottom of the first.
Roepke singled to start the UWSP second. Baker walked and an error loaded the bases. Cibrario hit a sac fly to get UWSP on the board. Candre followed with an RBI single to knot things at 2-2. Heckendorf gave the Pointers the lead with a 2-RBI triple. With two outs, Klicker singled to make it 5-2.
The Eagles scored two in the second, two more in the third and two additional runs in the fifth. UWSP had a leadoff runner on in the fourth, fifth and again in the seventh to no avail.
Zygowski and Wythe had two strikeouts each in the circle. Tkach fanned one.
UWSP returns home for Senior Day to face UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday (May 2). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
