DE PERE, Wis. – Freshman
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) had five RBI over the UW-Stevens Point softball team's sweep at St. Norbert (12-19-1) on Thursday. She drove in three in an 8-1 win in game one and two more as the Pointers (20-8) won game two, 4-1.
Otto had five hits on the day as well with a pair of home runs in game one. Fellow freshman
Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake) had four hits, three in game two.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had a hit in each game, extending her hitting streak to nine games. She has hit safely in 22 of the last 25 games.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) earned the win in both games in the circle to improve to 11-2 on the season.
Game 1 – UWSP 8, SNC 1
Otto singled to lead off the second inning.
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) and Roepke each singled to get UWSP on the board.
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) and
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) drew consecutive walks to push in another run. Candre doubled to drive in two and UWSP led, 4-0.
Otto blasted a solo home run to start the third pushing the advantage to 5-0.
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) drove in a run in the fourth on a two-out single to make it 6-0.
Otto homered again in the seventh, a two run shot to complete the scoring.
Zygowski pitched 5.0 with two strikeouts and just two hits allowed.
Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) struck out two in 2.0 innings of relief.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, SNC 1
Neither team scored in game two until the Green Knights got on the board in the fifth on an unearned run.
Baker drew a two-out walk in the sixth. Roepke and
Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) hit consecutive singles to tie the game at 1-1. A passed ball allowed another run to score in the inning.
Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) doubled to begin the seventh. Candre singled to put runners on the corners. With two down, Otto came through with a two-RBI single to give UWSP a 4-1 lead.
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) pitched 5.0 innings with four strikeouts and picked up the save with a perfect seventh. Zygowski notched her second win of the day with 2.0 frames of one-hit ball with two more strikeouts.
The Pointers travel to UW-La Crosse on Saturday (April 29) for a league doubleheader. First pitch has been moved up to 12:00 p.m.
