STEVENS POINT, Wis. – It may have been cold out, but the Pointers' bats were hot as the No. 23 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (20-9, 11-5) clubbed 10 home runs on Sunday to complete the series sweep of visiting UW-Stout (11-13, 4-12). UWSP hit eight home runs in game one to run-rule the Blue Devils, 22-0. The Pointers hit two more in game two to win, 8-1.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) was dealing despite the lengthy periods between pitches watching the UWSP offense rack up runs. He allowed just one hit and tossed a complete game shutout to move to 4-0 on the season. Paulsen fanned a career-best 11 in the win.
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) led the offensive charge with three home runs on the day. He drove in seven on the day and totaled five hits.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) and
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) each hit two home runs in game one. Comer scored five times on the day and had four RBI in game one. Nelson scored six times, drew four walks and had three RBI.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) homered and drove in three in game one.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) hit a three-run pinch-hit home run in game one as well.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) belted a three-run home run in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 22, Stout 0 (7 inn.)
The Blue Devils got a two-out single in the first, their lone hit before the UWSP bats got going.
Boos and Nelson drew consecutive walks to start the UWSP first. Comer was hit by a pitch and a wild pitch gave UWSP a 1-0 lead.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drove in a run with a groundout. Then with two away,
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) hit a double to push the advantage to 3-0.
Oliver hit his first home run of the day to lead off the second. He hit a two-run single in the third with one away. Three batters later, Nelson belted a two-run home run and UWSP was up 10-0 after three.
In the fourth, Oliver followed a
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) single with a two-run home run.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) doubled on the next pitch. Boos, Nelson and Comer homered in consecutive at-bats to make it 16-0.
Comer and Baumann each hit three-run home runs in the fifth as UWSP went ahead 22-0 after five.
Paulsen took care of the rest allowing just three Stout base runners in the game - an intentional walk and a single in the first and a walk in the sixth.
Game 2 – UWSP 8, Stout 1.
Nelson drew a one-out walk in the third. Two batters later, Oliver blasted his third home run of the day for a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, Comer led off with a double. Oliver walked and Van Ess was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Canterbury hit a sac fly to make it 3-0.
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) hit a deep fly ball to left that was dropped allowing two more to score for a 5-0 lead.
Nelson and Comer drew walks in the seventh. With two down, Van Ess launched a three-run home run to left-center to put UWSP up 8-0.
The Blue Devils finally scratched across a run in the ninth on two hits.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) fanned nine in 7.1 innings to earn the win.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) tossed the final 1.2 with one strikeout.
The Pointers will travel to Appleton on Thursday (April 27) for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game against Lawrence.
