Canterbury Homers Three Times, Homolka Hits Two Walk-Offs in Pointers’ Sweep

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) had walk-off hits in both games as the No. 23 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (18-9, 9-5) swept a doubleheader from UW-Stout (11-11, 4-10). The Pointers won game one, 14-4 in eight innings, and game two, 6-5, while both teams endured five brief delays due to snow fall.
 
Brenden Canterbury (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) hit three home runs on the day, two in game one. He had six RBI. Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) drove in eight runs on the day, including a three-run home run in game two.
 
Homolka had four hits on the day with five RBI and he scored twice. Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) scored five runs and had three hits. Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) also had three hits on the day.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 14, Stout 4 (8 inn.)
Nelson doubled in the first inning and moved to third on a passed ball. Comer followed with a sac fly and UWPS took a 1-0 lead.
 
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) singled to start the third. Boos was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Comer hit his second sac fly of the fame for a 2-0 advantage.
 
After Stout got a run in the fourth, Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the frame. Homolka then blasted a two-run home run to right for a 4-1 lead.
 
In the fifth, Boos lead off with a bunt single. Nelson replaced him on first on a fielder's choice. A groundout and a wild pitch moved Nelson to third. Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) drew a two-out walk. UWSP got a run in on a double steal attempt for a 5-1 lead.
 
Canterbury hit a solo home run in the sixth to up the advantage to 6-1. The Blue Devils got three runs in the top of the eighth to get within 6-4.
 
Van Ess reached on an infield single to start the UWSP eighth. Homolka singled and Canterbury homered again for a 9-4 lead. Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) launched a solo home run to make it 10-4. Matson walked, Boos was hit by a pitch and Nelson walked to load the bases with no outs. Comer doubled to push home all three runners. Tomczak walked and, two batters later, Homolka delivered a walk-off single for the run-rule win.
 
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 7.0 innings in the start to earn the win. He struck out five. Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) picked up his second save in as many games striking out the only batter he faced.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 6, Stout 5
Stout used two walks and two hit batters to get a first-inning run without a hit.
 
Neither team got a hit until the third. Matson and Nelson drew walks in the third for UWSP. Comer posted the first hit of the game, a three-run home run to put the Pointers ahead, 3-1.
 
Canterbury led off the fourth with a solo home run for a 4-1 advantage.
 
The Blue Devils hit two home runs in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. Stout took the lead in the ninth on a solo home run, 5-4.
 
In the bottom of the ninth, Nelson hit a one-out single. Comer reached on a fielder's choice and Van Ess drew a walk to load the bases. Homolka then came through with a two-RBI double down the right field line for the 6-5 walk-off win.  
 
Mason Weckler (Belvidere, Ill./North) struck out five in the start. He took a no-hitter into the fifth inning. Tyler Beyer (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Lincoln) struck out three in 3.0 of relief. Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) got the win with two strikeouts in the ninth.
 
The Pointers and Blue Devils wrap up the series with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday (April 23).
