STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (16-9, 7-5) took both games from visiting No. 12 UW-Whitewater (16-7, 7-5) on Saturday. UWSP won the opener, 2-1, and prevailed by a 6-3 final in six innings in game two after the game was called after a two hour rain and lightning delay.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) had two hits apiece on the day. Tomczak came up with three RBI in game two, two on a pivotal double in the fifth inning. He also scored twice.
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) went 3-for-3 in game two with two runs batted in.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) scored two runs in game two.
Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWW 1
UWW got on the board in the second inning with a run on three hits to take a 1-0 lead.
UWSP got runners on in the third, fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to produce a run in any of those frames.
In the seventh, Brenden Cnaterbury reached and moved to second on two errors by UWW.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) put down a sacrifice bunt and moved to second on a throwing error as Canterbury scored to tie the game. Boos pushed a bunt past the pitcher for a single to put runners on the corners.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) singled to give UWSP a 2-1 lead.
Nick Paulsen (Balsam Lake, Wis./Unity) got the win to move to 3-0 on the season. He struck out five over 7.1 innings.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) struck out one to earn the save, his 20th career save to tie the program record.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, UWW 3 (6 inn.)
Boos doubled to start the UWSP first inning. Two batters later, Comer drew a walk. Tomczak ripped a double to get the Pointers on the board. A UWW error allowed another run to scored. Then with two outs, Homolka singled to plate another for a 3-0 lead.
The Warhawks got one run in the third and two in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3.
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) was hit by a pitch to start the UWSP fifth. Comer doubled to put two in scoring position. Tomczak followed with a single to plate both runners.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) singled to put two aboard. Two batters later, Homolka singled to push home a run for a 6-3 lead.
After a scoreless top of the sixth, lightning moved into the area halting play. Two hours and one minute later following a lengthy and heavy downpour, the game was called.
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out three in the start.
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) got the win and struck out one.
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) earned the save with two strikeouts in a scoreless frame.
UWSP will travel to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (April 19) for two seven-inning non-conference games beginning at 1:00 p.m.
