DECATUR, Ill. – The No. 6 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (3-0) needed an extra inning to get past host Millikin (8-4) for a 4-2 victory in 10 innings on Monday to wrap up the opening weekend of action.
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) went 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored to lead the UWSP offense. Seven of the other eight hitters in the lineup had one hit each.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) and
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) had an RBI and a run scored each.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) and
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) each had a run batted in.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) also scored a run.
Henwood singled and moved to third on a double by Boos with one away in the second. Van Ess singled to drive in one and an error allowed the second run to score as UWSP took a 2-0 lead.
Millikin got a run in the third on two hits with a sac bunt in between. A hit, a walk, a sac bunt and a sacrifice fly in the sixth for Millikin tied the game at 2-2.
The game remained deadlocked until the 10th inning. Tomczak singled to start the frame. Comer singled and both runners moved into scoring position on a sac bunt by
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville). Pinch hitter
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Henwood drew a walk to push home the go-ahead and eventual winning run. Boos followed with an RBI groundout for a 4-2 lead.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) tossed the ninth and 10th innings to pick up the win. He struck out two batters and the only base runner he allowed reached via an error.
Casey Pickering (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) went 6.0 in the start and struck out three.
UWSP will next be in action at the RussMatt Invitational in Florida. The Pointers' first game is March 16 at 4:30 p.m. ET against Ithaca.
