Late Rally Comes Up Short for Pointers in Florida Opener

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 3 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (3-1) dropped its first game of the season, 4-1, to Ithaca (7-4) in UWSP's first game of the week in Florida.

The Pointers had five hits in the game with five different batters recording one each. Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) scored the lone run with Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) picking up the RBI.

Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and Henwood drew back-to-back two-out walks in the second, the first base runners for either team, but UWSP couldn't grab the lead.

The Bombers turned a leadoff walk into the game's first run in the bottom of the third. A fielder's choice followed by a hit and a rundown got the run on the board.

Ithaca added single tallies in the fourth and fifth with two hits in each inning. Another Bombers' run pushed across in the seventh on two more hits.

UWSP finally got two hits in an inning in the ninth. Matson hit a one-out double into the left field corner. He moved to third on a infield single up the middle by Homolka. Henwood drove him in on a fielder's choice, but the Pointers couldn't add to the rally.

Freshman pitcher Mason Weckler (Belvidere, Ill./North) made his first start for UWSP. He went six and struck out three. Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) struck out one and JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) struck out two in an inning of relief each.

The Pointers are back in action on Friday (March 17) with a 1:30 p.m. ET first pitch against Bethel.
