Pointers Win Twice in the Florida Sun, Score 11 in Fourth

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (10-4) scored 11 times in the fourth inning of game two en route to a pair of wins on Thursday. UWSP took down Carleton (8-5) by a 4-1 final before the monster fourth propelled the Pointers to a 12-2 victory over St. Catherine (6-9) in game two.
 
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) had a pair of hits and an RBI in each game. She scored twice in game two. Lillie Lindgren (Elburn, Ill./Kaneland) had three hits on the day with an RBI in game one.
 
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) also had three hits on the day with three RBI and a run scored. Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) had a hit and scored a run in each game. Her hit in game two was a three-run home run.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Carleton 1
Klicker began the UWSP second inning with a single and moved to second on an error. Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) drew a walk to put two aboard. Lindgren got UWSP on the board with a single to left to push Klicker home. Two batters later, Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) drove in a run with a groundout. Candre added another run with an RBI double as UWSP went ahead 3-0.
 
The Knights put a run on the board in the third on two hits, a double steal and an RBI groundout.
 
In the fourth, UWSP got the run back. Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) drew a leadoff walk. Heckendorf and Candre were hit by pitches in consecutive plate appearances. With one out, Traxel drew a walk to push in a run for the 4-1 lead.
 
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) went 3.2 innings in the start. She struck out six and scattered three hits. Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) earned the win in relief with 3.1 frames and three strikeouts.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 12, St. Catherine 2 (5 inn.)
Candre singled to begin the game and moved to second on a groundout. With two away, Meyers singled to put UWSP ahead, 1-0.
 
The lead remained one until the fourth. Heckendorf doubled with one down. Candre followed with a double to plate the first run Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) drew a walk and Traxel hit a single with another run scoring on the play. Meyers pushed home a run with a single for a 4-0 lead. Following a pitching change, Klicker launched a three-run home run on the first pitch. Walks by Baker and Lindgren put two on base. Cibrario was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Van Beek drew a walk to drive in a run. Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) followed with a two-RBI single. Traxel also drove in two with a single as the lead grew to 12-0 with the 11-run inning.
 
The Wildcats got on the board with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth to spoil the shutout bid.
 
In the fifth, Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake) got her first collegiate hit, an infield single to third.
 
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) recorded her sixth win of the season with seven strikeouts in 4.0 innings. Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) tossed a scoreless fifth, striking out one and not allowing a hit.
 
The Pointers wrap up the trip to Florida with a pair of games on Friday (March 24). UWSP will face St. Olaf at 9:00 a.m. ET and Westminster (Mo.) at 11:30 a.m. ET.
