WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (12-4) extended its winning streak to six games as UWSP shut out St. Olaf (4-7) and Westminster (0-15) by 4-0 and 11-0 finals, respectively, to wrap up play at The Spring Games in Florida.
In the opener,
Abby Van Beek (Mayville, Wis./Mayville) and
Makenna Tkach (Streator, Ill./Marquette Academy) combined on a one-hitter.
Ashley Zygowski (Saukville, Wis./Port Washington) and
Addison Wythe (Stillman Valley, Ill./Stillman Valley) combined in game two to shut out Westminster on five hits.
Offensively,
Trinity Otto (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) went 5-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Maddie Candre (St. Charles, Ill./East) and
Allie Meyers (Oak Forest, Ill./Oak Forest) had two hits each with Candre scoring three times and Meyers driving in three.
Sophia Heckendorf (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) had a hit and a run scored in each game.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, St. Olaf 0
Heckendorf hit a one-single in the third inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Candre singled to center as Heckendorf raced home for the first run of the game.
Candre reached on an error to begin the fifth. Otto singled to put two aboard. Pinch hitter
Meg Lawrence (Antioch, Ill./Antioch Community) also reached on an error as the first run of the inning scored on the play. Meyers followed with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. After another error put runners on the corners,
Rachel Baker (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton Community) put down a great sacrifice bunt to push home the fourth run.
Van Beek and Tkach were dealing all game in the circle. Van Beek went 3.2 in the start, striking out six and holding the Oles without a hit. Tkach went the final 3.1 to earn the win, giving up just one hit and striking out two.
Game 2 – UWSP 11, Westminster 0 (5 inn.)
Candre was hit by the first pitch of the game. Otto singled to short to put two on base. Traxel put down a sacrifice bunt and reached on a throwing error pushing home a run with two in scoring position. Meyers singled to score a run and
Jesse Klicker (Spring Grove, Ill/Richmond-Burton Community) hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. Baker followed with an RBI double as pinch runner
Keltie Cloud (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) scored for a 4-0 lead.
Otto singled with two outs in the second to start a rally. She stole second and scored on a double by
Sara Traxel (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek). Meyers singled again and drove in a run to up the lead to 6-0.
Emmie Cibrario (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) reached on a one-out infield single in the third. She stole second and moved to third on a Heckendorf single. Candre drew a walk to load the bases. Otto belted a ground-rule double to left that one-hopped the fence to drive in two. Traxel drove in another with a fielder's choice groundout as the lead grew to 9-0.
In the fifth,
Hannah Roepke (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake) led off with a double, her first career extra-base hit.
Jena Garceau (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli Catholic) drew a walk to put two on base.
Clarissa Messina (Rosemont, Ill./East Leyden) hit a single through the left side to drive in a run. Klicker then hit a sacrifice fly for the 11-0 score.
Zygowski picked up the win, her seventh of the season. She struck out four. Wythe pitched the final two innings with just one hit allowed.
The Pointers return home to face Lakeland on Wednesday (March 29). First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
