AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The No. 3 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (6-2) won its third straight with a 5-2 victory over Colby (5-3) on Monday.
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) had the decisive blow, a three-run home run in the eighth that sealed the win.
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Kyle Finger (Clintonville, Wis./Clintonville) had two hits apiece as UWSP had seven total hits.
UWSP starter
JD Schultz (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) picked up his first win of the season with six solid frames. He struck out six with just three hits allowed.
Schultz struck out the side in the first inning, but the Mules were able to get on the board with two hits in the frame.
The Pointers got the run back in the bottom of the first.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) drew a leadoff walk. He stole second and advanced to third on a balk. Tomczak drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game at 1-1.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Logan Homolka (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) was hit by a pitch. Pinch runner
Tommy Drohner (Plover, Wis./SPASH) moved to second as
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) drew a walk. With two away, a throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score.
The score remained 2-1 until the eighth.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) and Finger had back-to-back hits to begin the inning. Tow batters later, Henwood launched a three-run home run to left for a 5-1 advantage. Three more walks loaded the bases for UWSP, but all were stranded.
In the top of the ninth, Colby's leadoff batter hit a solo home run, but the Mules couldn't muster any more runs.
Sidney Ferry (Paw Paw, Mich./Homeschooled) recorded his third save of the season tossing the final two innings. He had one strikeouts.
Mitchell Crawley (Wind Lake, WIs./Muskego) also had a strikeout in an inning of relief.
The Pointers are back at it on Tuesday (March 21) with a 9:30 a.m. ET contest against Washington and Jefferson.
