DAVENPORT, Fla. – Sophomore
Anthony Tomczak (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit a two-run first-inning home run and the No. 7 UW-Stevens Point baseball team (7-2) never looked back in a 9-1 victory over Washington and Jefferson College (9-4).
Tomczak added a team-high third RBI later in the game.
Trent Van Ess (Two Rivers, Wis./Two Rivers) and
Payton Nelson (Wausau, Wis./West) had two RBI each and combined for five hits on the day. All three had a runs scored.
Jakob Boos (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) went 3-for-4 with a run batted in and two runs scored.
Logan Matson (Neillsville, Wis./Neillsville) also had two hits.
Nelson hit a one-out single in the bottom of the first. Tomczak followed with a two-run shot to left to put the Pointers in front.
Boos and
Quin Henwood (Appleton, Wis./North) hit consecutive singles to begin the second.
Matt Baumann (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) drew a walk to load the bases. Van Ess singled to center to drive in one. Nelson continued the rally with a two-run single. Two batters later,
Bradley Comer (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) drove in a run with a groundout for a 6-0 lead.
The Presidents got on the board in the sixth. Two hits with a wild pitch in between plated to lone run on a fielder's choice for WJC.
UWSP got the run back in the bottom of the sixth. Baumann drew another walk and stole second with two outs. Tomczak hit a single to push him home for a 7-1 advantage.
Matson began the seventh with a double. He moved to third on a fly out by pinch hitter
Kamden Oliver (Viroqua, Wis./Viroqua). Boos singled to plate a run. Henwood walked and both runner moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Van Ess drove in a run with an infield single as the lead reached 9-1.
UWSP starter
Mason Weckler (Belvidere, Ill./North) earned his first career win with 6.0 innings pitched. He struck out six and scattered three hits.
Jacob Meinholz (Middleton, Wis./Middleton) struck out three in relief and
Nick Carpenter (Lake Mills, Wis./Lake Mills) also had a strikeout in relief.
The Pointers conclude the Florida Trip on Wednesday (March 22) with a 9:00 a.m. ET against No. 9 Johns Hopkins.
