RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-12, 3-9) was out-scored 11-0 over the final five minutes of the first quarter and that was the deficit at the end in a 64-53 loss at UW-River Falls (14-9, 4-8) on Wednesday.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led all scorers with 15 points.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led all players with 10 rebounds and was one of three Pointers to add six points.
Pfeifer made a layup in the opening seconds and Thomson hit two free throws for a 4-2 lead. Pfeifer nailed a three and
Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) scored to UWSP within 15-11. But the Falcons scored the final 11 points of the quarter for a 26-11 lead.
The Pointers returned the favor holding UWRF off the scoreboard for the first 6:23 of the second quarter. In the meantime, Gawlitta and
Josie Nies (Platteville, Wis./Platteville) made baskets. Pfeifer drilled another three and
Olivia Hoerl (Chilton, Wis./Chilton) made a free throw as UWSP got within 26-19.
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) and Hoerl each scored, but UWRF pushed the lead back to 11 by the break.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) and
Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) combined for three makes from beyond the arc as the Pointers got the lead briefly to eight. McIntye added a bucket as UWSP trailed 50-38 heading to the fourth.
Pfeifer nailed a three to begin the fourth as UWSP attempted to chip away.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added four points and Pfeifer buried another three late, but the Falcons maintained a double-digit lead most of the quarter.
UWSP returns home for the final time in the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 11). It will be the annual Play4Kay game and fans are encouraged to wear pink for the 6:00 p.m. tip-off against UW-Eau Claire.
