Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pointers’ Comeback Attempt Thwarted in Home Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-13, 3-10) rallied from a double-digit deficit for a lead in the second half before falling to visiting UW-Eau Claire (18-6, 9-4) by a 72-60 final.

Gabby Gawlitta (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) led UWSP in scoring with 12 points. Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) was also in double figures with 11. She just missed a double-double with a team-best nine rebounds.

Thomson buried a three to begin the game. Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) drilled a triple late, but UWSP trailed 18-10 after one.

The Blugolds quickly put the deficit into double digits to begin the second quarter. Another three by Thomson sparked a 16-2 run by the Pointers. Katelyn Slowik (Elcho, Wis./Elcho) drained a three of her own and scored the final five points in the run as UWSP took a 29-26 lead. Courtney Kreuger scored a bucket late, but the Blugolds eked back in front, 33-31, at the half.

Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) hit a jumper in the opening minute of the third and Gawlitta completed an and-one to give UWSP a 36-33 lead. UWEC went on a 12-2 run before Abbie Campion (Janesville, Wis./Milton) hit from behind the arc and scored six straight.  A layup by McIntyre in the final minute put the game at a 46-46 tie heading to the fourth.

Thomson hit her third from long range for a 51-49 lead. The Pointers kept pace and another three by Campion got UWSP within 59-57. But a Slowik layup in the final minute accounted for most of UWSP's points as UWEC ended the game on a 13-3 run.

The Pointers will travel to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday (Feb. 15) to wrap up the regular season. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
