STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Neither team was able to generate much offense early, but a surge in the second quarter by visiting UW-La Crosse (17-5, 6-5) was the difference for UW-Stevens Point women's basketball (11-11, 3-8) in a 58-48 home defeat.
Jamie Pfeifer (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led the Pointers in scoring with 14 points.
Courtney Krueger (Merrill, Wis./Merrill) added 13 points.
Alexa Thomson (De Pere, Wis./West) led UWSP with 11 rebounds.
Pfeifer scored all four points for the Pointers in the first quarter and neither team scored in the final 8:05 as UWSP led 4-2 after one.
Pfeifer scored again to start the second quarter to push the lead to 6-2. The Eagles posted an 8-1 run before
Kelly McIntyre (Waukesha, Wis./North) and Krueger each scored to put UWSP back in front, 11-10. But UWL scored the final 12 points of the half as UWSP trailed 22-11 at the break.
Krueger scored UWSP's first five points of the third quarter.
Emily Mortenson (Oregon, Wis./Oregon) buried a three, but UWSP's deficit was 42-26 heading to the fourth.
Mortenson nailed another three in the fourth quarter. Krueger and Thomson also hit from behind the arc late, but the Pointers only able to get within 10 by the end.
The Pointers travel to UW-River Falls on Wednesday (Feb. 8). Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
