MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's tennis team began the spring season Friday and needed a big rally to earn a 5-4 win at St. Catherine.
UWSP's No. 2 doubles team of
Barbara Covek (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) and
Jenna Koepp (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) needed a tiebreaker to earn an 8-7 (7-5) win.
Following the first two singles matches, the Pointers found themselves trailing 4-1.
Faith Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) started the comeback with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles. Covek continued the rally with a 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 win at No. 4 singles.
The tiebreak theme continued at No. 5 singles.
Maya Kunze (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) took the opening set, 7-5. After falling, 6-4, in the second set, Kunze prevailed in the tiebreak, 12-10.
It all came down to the No. 6 singles.
Chloe Leithold (Onalaska, Wis./Onalaska) took the first set, 7-5. In the second set, it came down to yet another tiebreak as Leithold pulled out the win, 7-6 (7-2).
The Pointers return to action on March 18 against Cardinal Stritch. First serve that day is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
