EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (12-13-1) held on until the end in a 2-0 defeat at No. 7 UW-Eau Claire (21-3-2) in the first semifinal of the WIAC Tournament (presented by Culver's).
UWSP senior goaltender
Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 38 saves and allowed just one goal. Schultz made 14 saves in the first period as the teams skated to a scoreless tie after one.
But just 10 seconds into the second period, the Blugolds scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winner.
Schultz made 15 more saves in the second period to keep UWSP within a goal. She had nine more saves in the third period before the Pointers pulled her for an extra attacker.
The move did not work out in UWSP's favor as the Blugolds tacked on an empty-net goal with 32.5 seconds remaining to close out the scoring.
The Pointers were credited with just nine shots on goal.
Annika Horman (Appleton, Wis./North) and
Ali Granovsky (St. Paul, Minn./Roseville) had two each to lead the way. UWEC goaltender Stephanie Martin made all nine saves for the win.
UWSP and UWEC will faceoff again on Saturday (Feb. 25) in game two of the semifinals. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m.
