Smith Shuts Out UWS, Poulias Nets Two in Season Finale Win

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (16-5-4, 12-2-1) finished the season sweep of UW-Superior (14-9-2, 9-5-1) with a 4-0 triumph in the regular season finale.
 
Freshman Matthias Smith (Courtenay, B.C.) needed to make just 15 saves for his first career shutout. Six of his saves came in a scoreless first period before UWSP opened the scoring.
 
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) scored his first of the night, the eventual game-winner, at 3:09 of the second period. Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) picked up his third point of the weekend with a helper and Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa./) got the other assist.
 
Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill./) pushed the UWSP lead to 2-0 at 13:41 of the second. Seniors Wilson Northey (North Vancouver, B.C./) and Jordan Fader (Rice Lake, Wis./) provided assists on the goal.
 
Poulias scored his second of the night at 2:08 of the third. Evan Junker (Elk River, Minn./) and Brett Humberstone (Kingston, Ont./) assisted on the goal.
 
Junker had another assist minutes later, feeding Nick Gonrowski (New Hope, Minn./) for the final goal at 5:03 of the third period.
 
The Pointers put 44 shots on UW-Superior goaltender Myles Hektor and he stopped 40 in the loss.
 
UWSP will get a bye as the top seed in the WIAC Tournament. The Pointers will await the winner of the UW-Stout versus UW-River Falls first round series. The semifinal round will be at K.B. Willett Arena on Feb. 24 and 25, both 7:00 p.m. puck drops. Tickets will be on sale to the public beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Feb. 20.
