Women’s Hockey Secures Third in WIAC with 5-3 Win in League Finale

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (11-12-1, 5-7-0) secured the three-seed in the WIAC Tournament with a 5-3 win over UW-Superior (9-14-0, 2-8-0).

Natalie Ahern (Byron, Minn./Byron) put UWSP in front with a goal at 6:03 of the first. Kayla Stumo (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine) fired a shot from the point and Ahern buried the rebound as UWSP held a 1-0 lead after one.

Scoring opened up in the second and the Yellowjackets got the first just 1:02 into the period on the power play.

Fifty second later, Annika Horman (Appleton, Wis./North) put the Pointers back in front with an unassisted goal. At 6:31 of the second, the Yellowjackets again pulled even.

Soile Doyle (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) netted her first career goal at 17:48 of the second giving UWSP the lead for good. She ripped a shot from the top of the circle with Sara Aadalen (Wayzata, Minn./Wayzata) and Laina Berthiaume (South Haven, Minn./Hutchinson) getting assists.

Josie Bender (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) gave the Pointers a two-goal lead at the 2:07 mark of the third. She corralled the puck in the corner and fired a pass towards the front of the net. It glanced off the defender's skate and in for the goal, the eventual game-winner.

The Yellowjackets got another power-play goal late in the third and pulled their goalie in the closing minutes.

Horman took advantage of the empty net firing a shot from her own zone to score her second of the game.

Olivia Schultz (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) made 33 saves to earn the win, her 32nd career victory to take over fourth in program history in the category. UWS goaltender Rose Beeman made 20 saves.

The Pointers will host Concordia (Wis.) on Tuesday (Feb. 14). It will be Mental Health Awareness Night with free Dunkin' Donuts for the 7:00 p.m. puck drop at K.B. Willett Arena.
