SUPERIOR, Wis. –
Fletcher Anderson (Thunder Bay, Ont./Sir William Churchill) scored both goals as the No. 9 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team (15-5-4, 11-2-1) defeated UW-Superior (14-8-2, 9-4-1) to earn the 16th WIAC regular season title in school history. UWSP secured the top-seed and home-ice throughout the WIAC Tournament.
Anderson gave the Pointers the lead with a power-play goal at 7:29 of the first period.
Andrew Poulias (Whitby, Ont./) and
Mick Heneghan (Niles, Ill./) provided helpers as UWSP led after one.
Neither team scored in the second period, although UWSP goaltender
Ryan Wagner (Indianapolis, Ind./) was busier in the period with 11 saves than he was in the first when he needed to make just one stop.
Near the midway point of the third period, the Yellowjackets found an equalizer.
But the game was only tied for just over a minute. Anderson netted his second of the game at 10:11 of the third. His eventual game-winner was assisted on by
Dawson Sciarrino (Greensburg, Pa./).
Wagner needed to make just one more of his 21 saves to secure the win. Superior goaltender Dylan Meilun had 27 saves.
UWSP and UW-Superior wrap up the regular season on Saturday (Feb. 11) with a 7:00 p.m. game at Wessman Arena.
